Wales Launches Open Access Fibre Network

On 27th November, FibreSpeed, an open access fibre network, will officially launch. The network has created open passive and active fibre infrastructure linking 14 business parks across the north of Wales, UK.

The investment, by the Welsh Assembly Government, the European Regional Development Fund and Geo Networks Ltd, will offer wholesale access to dark fibre, high capacity wavelengths and Gigabit Ethernet services.

FibreSpeed was amongst the earliest-planned public sector interventions in next generation broadband, and one of the few to so far make it to market. Eight retail service providers have signed agreements with FibreSpeed to date, and will compete to offer a range of advanced, innovative and high speed broadband services to business.

Thanks to the public investment in the open infrastructure, the retail prices of those services will rival the most competitive in the UK.
