UK Cableco Unveils 50Mbps National Rollout Plan

Virgin Media, the UK residential and business cable operator, has launched a new domestic 50Mbps service.  It will be available throughout Virgin’s coverage areas within the next 6 months.

A service of such speed easily dwarves the equivalent services available from UK broadband ISPs, none of which have large scale FTTH deployments yet in operation. 

However, as FTTH Council Europe President Joeri Van Bogaert notes in his interview with the BBC, cable technology only allows the service to be asymmetric, thereby enabling far slower uploading in comparison to downloading.  This impacts the feasibility of many bandwidth intensive applications such as video conferencing and teleworking.
