|Portugal’s New Age of Discovery|
Portugal is about to discover if it has what it takes to become a European FTTH leader. Just like its first age of discovery, this one is characterised by vision, collaboration and hard-headed funding.
On January 7th, Portugal Telecom, Sonaecom, Oni Communications and ZON Multimedia (the cable operator) reached agreement with each other and the Portuguese government on co-operation and duct sharing for a new generation of fibre access networks.
For its part the government is committed to opening ducts to NGNs, to unambiguous regulation, and to offering lines of credit to a minimum of 800 million Euros. It hopes that the joint commitments will deliver FTTH to 1.5 million homes by the end of 2009.
