|Swiss city of Basel to get FTTH network|
Utility company IWB and Swisscom have formed a joint venture to connect every household in the city of Basel with fibre by 2017. The total investment will be CHF 174m, of which CHF 70m will come from IWB and CHF 22m from the district authorities in the form of an interest-bearing loan.
Rather than duplicating network infrastructure, the plan is to roll out the network at the lowest possible cost, and open it up to competitive service providers. Letters of intent have been already signed with Sunrise and CATV, who intend to offer telephony, internet and/or TV services on the network in addition to Swisscom.
